The UC Berkeley is widely believed to have set the stage for University Taekwondo of the world. It began in 1969, when Professor. Ken Min, who is an honorary professor at UC Berkeley and was coordinator of the martial arts program, the predecessor of the 'UC Martial Arts Program'(UCMAP).

The UC Berkeley played an important role in the 'International University Sports Federation'(FISU), which organizes the 'Universiade,' until Taekwondo was adopted as a official sport. In addition, the UCMAP has become the center of American martial arts research in the theory and practical research of martial arts.

The UCMAP signed a memorandum of agreement(MOA) for the International Martial Arts Academy with the 'World Martial Arts Masterships Committee'(WMC) in October 2020. Last year, online education was conducted because of COVID-19 pandemic, and offline education in this time was the first education of the WMC International Martial Arts Academy.

Meanwhile, the WMC International Martial Arts Academy has been two-year since its first start in last year. Like last year, it was officially approved as an educational project sponsored by 'United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization'(UNESCO) in this year, and about 1,000 trainees have participated so far. This project is being carried out with funds from the 'Korea Sports Promotion Foundation'(KSPO).
