Twenty-three years after entering the 21st century, the world has become a global society dominated by 'Platforms.'

In recent years, as Korea has begun to gain popularity as a cultural content industry powers-nation, the keyword that the industry is paying attention to as much as substantial content production is "Platform."

If we preoccupy content platforms that connects producers and consumers as much as our ability to produce fun content, this is because it can become a true cultural content powers-nation.

There are many cases in which the word 'Platform,' which means the platform of a train station, is used in cultural industrial sites. The automobile industry is already creating various models based on a unified platform for each specific company. In the international defense market, land, sea, and air-based systems that use specific attack missile weapons are also collectively called to as 'Platforms.'

■ Sports, Platform, MICE Industry, International Organization

Sports industry is also dominated by platforms. Not only sports broadcasting stations that broadcast professional sports contents such as soccer, basketball, and baseball, but also various conventions and educational event brands, including the Olympic Games of the 'International Olympic Committee'(President Thomas Bach, IOC), are representative platform contents of the sports industry.

Although it is a single sports competition event, the World Cup of the 'Fédération Internationale de Football Association'(Presidents Gianni Infantino, FIFA), which is as enthusiastic as the Olympics, is also considered a representative example of the content of the sports game platform.

After all, the platform industry is bound to benefit the country where the headquarter of the organizations with the authority to develop and operate these platforms are located. Recently, advanced countries seem to be focusing on sports platforms, in other words, sports MICE industries and detaining the International Organizations, rather than hosting mega-sports events.

The MICE industry, abbreviation for △Meeting △Incentives travel △Conventions △Exhibitions/Events, is an industry that takes economic benefits by hosting international conferences, exhibitions, incentive tours and events with specialized facilities such as large-scale conferences and exhibitions.

Representative examples of MICE industries include the △Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation(APEC) Meeting △G20 Summit △Association of National Olympic Committees(ANOC) General Assembly △International Olympic Committee(IOC) Sessions △SportAccord Convention etc.

■ Martial Arts and MICE Industry Platforms

In today, various cases have already proven that the MICE industry is in the spotlight as a new age industry in advanced countries and the importance of platforms in the cultural content industry.

Then, what about the current status of the MICE industry platform of Martial Arts?

The 'World Combat Games,' which will be hosted by the 'Global Association of International Sports Federations'(President Ivo Ferriani, GAISF), which was decided to be dissolution on November 29, 2022 as it returns to SportAccord, is considered a representative martial arts and combat sports competition and MICE industrial brand in the international sports world.

There is also a MICE industrial platform that started in Korea and is recognized for international status. The 'World Martial Arts Masterships Committee'(President Si-Jong Lee, WMC) is that platform. WMC is a leading international martial arts industry such as △World Martial Arts Masterships △World Youth Martial Arts Masterships △Online World Martial Arts Masterships and △WMC General Meeting △International Martial Arts Academy △International Martial Arts Industry Fair △WMC TV etc.

■ Construct of Platforms with UNESCO and Martial Arts

There are a total of eighteen martial arts around the world listed on the Intangible Cultural Heritage(ICH) of Humanity of 'United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization'(Secretary General Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO). A total of eighteen martial arts are registered as intangible cultural heritage(ICH) of Humanity, with 'Kun LBokator,' which was most recently registered on November 29. Two Korean martial arts have been registered as Taekkyeon and Ssireum. And Taekwondo and archery are currently preparing to be registered.

In Korea, not only the activities of registered Korean martial arts, but also the activities of UNESCO advisory organizations and Category-2 centre related to martial arts are active. There are the ‘World Martial Arts Union’(President Hwa-Tae Jeong, WoMAU), which serves as an advisory NGO to the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, and the ‘UNESCO International Centre of Martial Arts’(Secretary-General Chang-Hyun Park, ICM), which is a Category-2 Centre. The ‘World Martial Arts Masterships Committee’(WMC) serves as a standing advisory NGO for UNESCO NGO advisory partnerships and the ‘Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport’(CIGEPS).

In particular, the WoMAU organizes and operates the 'Network of Martial Arts Elements in UNESCO List' in 13 martial arts from all over the world listed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List as follows.

△Bökh △Oil Wrestling △Pahlevani △Taekkyeon △Capoeira △Tahteeb △Kazakh Kuresi △Ssirum/Ssireum △Chidaoba △Traditional Turkish archery △Silat △Pencak Silat △Kun Lbokator

According to the UNESCO Korea, there are a total of 625 UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage sites on the list today. Martial arts proportion for only about 2.5% of the list, but at least the relationship between UNESCO and Martial Arts is very high in Korea. Compared to total intangible cultural heritage(ICH) of UNESCO, it is a small number, but in terms of the MICE industry, the number of eighteen martial arts seems appropriate.

■ About UNESCO Martial Arts Convention MICE Industry

Although it is disbanded now, the GIASF categorizes the purpose of its establishment by regular members such as △Association of Summer Olympic International Federations(ASOIF) △Association of the International Olympic Winter Sports Federations(AIOWF) △Association of IOC Recognised International Sport Federations(ARISF) △Alliance of Independent recognised Members of Sport(AIMS). These organizations will continue to work together with the 'International Olympic Committee'(IOC) and SportsAccord for their own purposes even after the GIASF is dissolution.

Then, how about establishing a central complex organization of the MICE industry, which hosts ▲conventions ▲academic conferences ▲exhibitions ▲competition events, only eighteen martial arts events around the world listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage(ICH) of Humanity of UNESCO?

By coordinating the activities of the existing 'UNESCO-Listed Martial Arts Promotion Committee,' it will be reborn as a complex sports event that combines various events as well as international conferences.

With advanced countries looking at the MICE industry as a future blue-ocean, they are eager to establish a 'Platform' for sports and cultural content markets, we have such excellent conditions as Martial Arts and UNESCO, as well as the 'World Martial Arts Masterships Committee'(WMC), the 'International Centre of Martial Arts'(ICM), and the 'World Martial Arts Union'(WoMAU).
